BIG COUNTRY ARE BACK!

Legendary 80's rockers Big Country are all set to return to the stage and have announced 4 UK shows to take place in January 2011. More may be added.

The band exploded onto the scene in 1983 with anthemic songs such as 'Fields Of Fire' and 'In A Big Country' which were culled from their classic debut album 'The Crossing' which sold several million worldwide. They followed up with a number one album 'Steeltown' and released 8 studio albums all of which entered the Top Ten. Big Country released 28 singles 5 of which were also Top Ten.

Approaching their 30th anniversary, the band are lining up concerts for a period of celebration that will not only embrace their illustrious past but also honour the life and times of original lead singer, guitarist and co-founder Stuart Adamson, who passed away so tragically in 2001. Taking on the mantle of lead singer and joining the band for these dates and more will be Mike Peters of fellow celtic rockers The Alarm.

"I first met Stuart on stage at a U2 concert in Hammersmith Palais back in 1983" says Mike Peters. "Bono introduced us to his audience as being "part of the the new breed" and Stuart was literally passed up onto the stage by the fans and I shook his hand as I handed him a guitar - an unforgettable entrance. The last time I saw him was also on stage with Big Country at Glasgow Barrowlands for the last night of the Final Fling tour in 2000, when we sang Neil Young's 'Rockin' In The Freeworld' together. When Bruce Watson called and asked me to sing for Big Country, it was something I didn't need to think twice about. I'm looking forward to meeting all the fans again and playing a part in keeping the spirit of Stuart Adamson alive and celebrating the music of a band I have loved from near and afar for the whole of my adult life".

Bass guitarist Tony Butler says "To play again as Big Country was something that was only going to happen if we could find someone who could compliment the band and sing the songs in the way they need to be sung - with heart and soul. Mike Peters from The Alarm has stepped in to fill the premise. It's about time the songs got another airing, and we think Stuart would be pleased too".

The new line up consists of:

Tony Butler - Bass Guitar and Vocals
Mark Brzezicki - Drums and Vocals
Mike Peters - Vocals and Guitar
Bruce Watson - Guitar and Vocals
Jamie Watson - Guitar

Dates are:

January
Wednesday 5th Newcastle O2 Academy
Thursday 6th London Islington O2 Academy
Friday 7th Birmingham O2 Academy
Saturday 8th Liverpool O2 Academy

All shows are on sale from Saturday 11th September @ 9am via www.gigsandtours.com or on 0844 811 0051. Tickets are priced £20 regionally (£22.50 London).

The band's official website www.bigcountry.co.uk will be selling tickets from today – Wednesday 8th September.

The reunited Big Country today revealed the tracklist for its upcoming 2CD “deluxe edition” reissue of its 1983 debut album The Crossing, which will be released by Universal Music on Jan. 30 in the U.K. and be supplemented with seven B-sides and a second disc featuring 17 demos — 10 of which are previously unreleased.

The new edition of the The Crossing, which was last reissued in 2002 with five bonus tracks, will feature the original 10-track album plus seven B-sides from the record’s four singles on one disc, plus a second disc featuring 17 demos of album tracks and B-sides, including early version of “In a Big Country,” “Fields of Fire” and more.

As previously announced, the band — with The Alarm’s Mike Peters filling in for the late Stuart Adamson — will perform The Crossing during a tour of the U.K. and Germany early next year in conjunction with the reissue. “We’d like to do something now, which is all about being proud of who you are and what you’re about. I think everyone should be that …” – Stuart Adamson, introducing The Seer – BBC In Concert.

On 29th July 2013, thirty-years since Britain’s legendary rocker’s Big Country released their classic debut album ‘The Crossing’, Universal Music will release ‘At The BBC’, a comprehensive four-disc collection that brings together the band’s BBC radio & TV performances between 1982 and 1990.

A must for all Big Country fans, ‘At The BBC’ includes forty-eight audio tracks, with no fewer than thirty of these recordings previously unreleased. In addition, the set’s accompanying DVD contains a staggering thirty-nine previously unreleased performances, including the band’s appearances on Top of The Pops, The Old Grey Whistle Test and live sets from The Edinburgh Playhouse and the Hexagon in Reading, amongst numerous others. The DVD also includes footage of Big Country’s late lead-singer and guitarist Stuart Adamson being interviewed by Richard Jobson, the lead singer with Adamson’s previous band The Skids.

Former Big Country bassist Tony Butler said, “To see, after all these years, such a collection of recordings and great memories made by the BBC, kind of makes me feel we got there. I mean, it’s the BBC! How cool.”

Big Country guitarist Bruce Watson added, “Watching the footage from Sefton Park in Liverpool brought back some fond memories. Loads of bodies covered in mud, very much a Woodstock atmosphere. Great days!”

The super-deluxe box set comes complete with a hardback book containing in-depth liner notes from respected journalist Tim Barr, archive photographs, a Big Country poster and postcards housed in a wallet.

There is also a 2CD version of the release which features selected audio highlights from the box set.

Big Country was originally formed in 1981 by guitar playing founder members Stuart Adamson and Bruce Watson both native of the band’s hometown Dunfermline in Scotland. Initially driven by a shared vision of widescreen guitar melody, harmony and lyric, the classic Big Country sound was further enhanced later that summer by the arrival of London-based rhythm section Mark Brzezicki and bassist Tony Butler. This is the Big Country that broke massively worldwide with the release of debut album The Crossing’s singles ‘Fields Of Fire’, ‘Chance’ and signature song ‘In A Big Country’, which went on to become massive worldwide hits, selling over 2 million copies and driving ‘The Crossing’ to 3 prestigious Grammy nominations in the USA.

The run of success continued throughout the 1980s with the release of the anthemic single ‘Wonderland’ and the second album ‘Steeltown’ (1984), which debuted at Number 1 in the UK and contained the hit singles ‘East Of Eden, ‘Just a Shadow’ and ‘Where The Rose Is Sown’ . In 1985, Big Country appeared at Live Aid in London, followed by further successful album releases ‘The Seer’ (1986, which included the bands biggest UK hit ‘Look Away’, which also reached Number 1 in the Irish Singles chart) and ‘Peace In Our Time’ (1988), which saw the band playing the first ever privately promoted gig in Russia at the Moscow Sports Stadium.

In the 1990s Big Country would go on to release studio albums ‘No Place Like Home’ (1991), Buffalo Skinners (1993) and ‘Why The Long Face (1995) – landing the band the special guest slot on the Rolling Stones ‘Voodoo Lounge’ European tour and several shows in the UK and Ireland with Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and Robert Plant – before releasing ‘Driving To Damascus’ in 1999.

In 2010, Big Country reformed, with the band’s friend Mike Peters from The Alarm on vocals. Following three sell-out UK tours and a run of acclaimed festival appearances bassist Tony Butler retired from the band, to be replaced by former Simple Minds bassist Derek Forbes. In May 2013, Big Country released ‘The Journey’, their first studio album in fourteen years.

Big Country ‘At The BBC’ captures the classic line-up at the peak of their powers, further cementing the band’s reputation as truly great live band.

Steeltown - Big Country

Dark and lyrical, 29 Jun 2010
By B. S. MarlayThis review is from: Steeltown (Audio CD)

For their second album, Big Country took a heavier direction, both in terms of sound and in lyrical content. Where their exuberant, mega successful 1983 debut, `The Crossing', used their bagpipe guitar technique to tell somewhat mythical `Boys Own' stories of heroic soldiers, ships and soaring romance, `Steeltown' was a darker, more political work. It was full of social observation and examinations of the problems of the British working classes. The romance was still there, but it had become muted and tragic, the soldiers angry and disillusioned. In a way, `The Crossing' could be seen as a patriotic call to arms and `Steeltown' the awful post-war reality of husbands killed in war, dole queues and domestic violence.

Lead singer and guitarist, Stuart Adamson's lyrics are more developed and poetic on `Steeltown', telegraphing that he had very serious intentions for this band, which went far beyond the gimmick of their guitar sound. In grand imagery, the soaring hard rock attack of the opening track, `Flame of the West', tells the tale of a visit by a rich politician or industrialist (US movie star President, Ronald Reagan?), to the impoverished mining towns. Adamson sets the tone for the album here - it is working class outrage. The slower, dirgier second track, `East of Eden', is beautiful and angry, as he takes on the part of a worker in the modern industrial machine ("I looked west in search of freedom and I saw slavery, I looked east in search of answers and I saw misery"). Then the aggression of the towering, anthemic title track makes it abundantly clear that exploitation of the working classes is his main concern this time out ("We built all this with our own hands, But who could know we built on sand").

The songs that follow look at the hypocrisy used to motivate young men to go to battle (`Where the Rose is Sown'), the plight of a young mother whose husband is killed in war (`Come Back to Me') and the frustration of dead end work that ends in relationship breakdown (`Just a Shadow'). Other songs are less overt, but take on a resonance from those around them (`The Girl with Grey Eyes', `The Great Divide').

Adamson's vocals are an impassioned cry on much of this album, but beautifully tender and sadly contemplative on the slower tracks (`The Girl with Grey Eyes', `Just a Shadow). The musicianship is first rate throughout and Mark Brzezicki's drumming is fantastic. Steve Lillywhite (U2, Peter Gabriel, Souxie and the Banshees, XTC) once again produces, coating proceedings with a slick sheen while retaining just enough grit to keep it sounding authentic.

Though `Steeltown' indisputably retains the Big Country sound, it is not an immediately accessible album, but it is one that delivers great rewards with repeated listens.
