After finishing several heralded world tours as Heaven & Hell last summer, Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice were tighter than ever before, both musically and personally.

Agreeing that it would be a shame to stop making music together at tour's end, the quartet began writing, first in England at Iommi's home studio and later in Los Angeles at Dio's studio. "The band had gotten too good to just walk away," Dio says. "We wanted to show people that we were still capable of giving them new music that measured up to what we'd done in the past."

With that goal in mind, the band once again converged on Rockfield Studios in Wales last winter, the same place they used 17 years earlier to record their last album, "Dehumanizer". The result is the long-awaited new album, "The Devil You Know", featuring 10 soon-to-be-classic tracks from the Dio-fronted version of Black Sabbath. The highly anticipated set arrives on April 28 from Rhino for a suggested list price of $18.98 (physical) and $9.99 (digital).

It took less than three weeks to finish the album, with most of the songs only needing a couple of takes. "It was good to play them live in the studio. It keeps you on edge," Iommi says. "I mean, somewhere along the line we were gonna have to play them live; might as well start in the studio." Butler adds: "We've learned from the past that you can kill a song doing it over and over. The first Sabbath albums were done in two or three days. Technically they weren't great, but vibe-wise they were great. If you capture that feeling, that's all you need."

"Bible Black", the epic first single, begins with Iommi on acoustic guitar behind Dio's plaintive wail before the rhythm shifts to a menacing stomp for the rest of this dark tale about a book of sinister scriptures. One of the first songs written for the album, Dio says it established a tone for the rest of the album. "When you start off with a blockbuster like that, it makes the rest of the album so much easier because it gives you a benchmark to measure the other songs against."

Iommi proves he hasn't lost the ability to inspire six-string envy, unleashing riffs like a pack of rabid hellhounds on "Atom And Evil", "Fear", "Neverwhere", and "Eating The Cannibals", a tune about doing more than biting the hand that feeds. Butler and Appice slow the pace while ramping up the intensity on "Follow The Tears" and "Double The Pain" and "Breaking Into Heaven", the latter diverging from its glacial procession for Dio's majestic chorus about fallen angels planning an attack on paradise.

It’s time to call the Guinness Book of Records on this one, because The Devil You Know must be the metal debut album with the oldest band members ever. Singer Ronnie James Dio is close to 70 and the other band members are close to retirement age too. Heaven and Hell is a musical collaboration featuring Black Sabbath members Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler along with former members Ronnie James Dio and Vinny Appice. The four members of Heaven and Hell toured together performing the Black Sabbath material from 1980-1982 and again from 1991-1992 last year. To some there is no Sabbath without Ozzy, to me it is the best singer they ever had. They decided to tour under the name of the first album they released in 1980, being Heaven and Hell, so that nobody would request 'Paranoid' or 'War Pigs' during live gigs. It was a great success so they decided to continue their renewed relationship for the third time in history.
 
So the big questions are of course, is The Devil You Know a worthwhile release? Does it match the Sabbath classics? Or should they have left it where it was? To answer the first: yes it is a worthwhile release. It is a great album in the traditional heavy Sabbath style. Tony Iommi again shows he is the maestro of guitar riffs. Dio is great as ever and as soon as he starts singing you know you’re in for a great ride. Will this man ever grow old? ‘Double The Pain’ is a testimony to that: it is a strong melody backed with the typical Sabbath sound, a riff backed with slow pounding drums bordering on the darker side of life which immediately reminds of how important Sabbath was and still is to metal.

The album is way better than 1992’s Dehumanizer, but it doesn’t match Heaven and Hell or The Mob Rules. That is of course impossible, both of them are regarded as classics. As if Iron Maiden will ever release another album matching the impact of Number of the Beast. Although officially a debut album, it is the first new full length album of Black Sabbath in 14 years. Fans will be thrilled with this release. Not only Dio shines on this album, Iommi and Geezer also deliver the goods on this one. It isn’t a Dio album backed with Sabbath members nor is it a Sabbath album with Dio on guest vocals.
 
Even the record cover is quite striking. It actually looks like a death metal cover. As the original album artwork is adapted from a painting by Per Haagensen entitled Satan, it will raise a few eyebrows. If you look close enough you can see that the artwork features the numbers 25 and 41. According to Geezer Butler these numbers refer to the Bible verse Matthew 25:41. It is about angels that sit on the left hand of God that fall from grace into hell. He also has explained that the name of the album is a reference to the name of the band, as fans know them as Black Sabbath.

ผมไม่ใช่แฟนเพลงแนวดูมหนืดๆสไตล์ Black Sabbath แต่ส่วนตัวลองฟังไปสองสามเพลงก็ถือว่าดีเลยครับ

ได้ยินว่าต้นสังกัดกำลังสั่งนำเข้าแผ่นนี้มาอยู่ แต่ยังมาไม่ถึง

ผมชอบเพลง Follow The Tears เพราะว่าฟังแล้วทำให้คิดถึงเพลง Zero The Hero จากอัลบั้มชุด Born Again
ของคณะ Black Sabbath อย่างไม่รู้เนื้อรู้ตัว !!!

จริงๆผมว่า Black Sabbath ชุดที่ Tony Martin มาร้องก็งานดีเหมือนกันนะครับ ออกไปทางเฮฟวี่ๆดี แต่อาจจะสู้ยุค Dio หรือ Ozzy ไมไ่ด้

แต่เชื่อว่าน่าจะดีกว่าชุด Born Again ที่ Ian Gillan มาร้องแน่นอน

ถ้าผมจำไม่ผิดตอน Black Sabbath มาเมืองไทยช่วงยุค 90's นักร้องคือ Tony Martin แต่มือกลองนี่ไม่แน่ใจครับ พี่ชายผมได้ไปดูด้วย และทาง IBC (UBC ปัจจุบัน) ก็มีการเอาเทปบันทึกการแสดงครั้งนั้นมาเปิดให้ชม และพี่ผมมีอัดวีดีโอไว้ด้วยแต่ไม่รู้ตอนนี้ยังอยู่หรือเปล่า?

ทำปกออกมาสวยมากเลยครับ

Ronnie James Dio กำลังต่อสู้กับ มะเร็งกระเพาะอาหารครับ ได้ข่าวแกตอบสนองต่อการรักษาด้วยเคมีบำบัดดีทีเดียว
แต่อย่างว่านะ แกคงอยู่อีกไม่นานแล้วล่ะ อายุ 67 ปีแล้วด้วย

Rockpalast นั่นจัดในสถานที่ที่ไม่ใหญ่ แต่ที่เทศกาล WACKEN OPEN AIR น่าจะคนละตัวกันครับ

ผมว่า  ใกล้ ๆ วันจำหน่ายคงมีตัวอย่างให้ได้ชมกันก่อนแน่ ๆ ครับ

สำหรับแฟนเพลงที่รักและอาลัยป๋า Dio...ต้องมีทั้งสองชุดนะครับ เพราะ Heaven and Hell เป็นประวัติศาสตร์ไปแล้ว

คอนเสิร์ต Rockpalast เล่นที่กรุงบอนน์ เมื่อวันที่ 16 มิ.ย. และน่าจะเป็นบู๊ทเลคจากทัวร์  The Devil You Know เพียงชุดเดียวที่เป็น Pro Shot

ส่วน Neon Nights : Live at Wacken  ถือเป็นฉากอำลาป๋าดิโอกับ Heaven and Hell ได้อย่างคู่ควรกับอภิมหาเทศกาลดนตรีเมทัลที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในปัจจุบัน

Heaven and Hell ขึ้นแสดงเป็นเฮดไลน์ในคืนแรกของ Wacken Open Air ครั้งที่ 20 เมื่อวันที่ 30 ก.ค. (ขึ้นแสดงต่อจาก Farewell Concert ของ Running Wild ซะด้วย) โดยมีเซ็ทลิสต์เหมือนกับการแสดงที่กรุงบอนน์ เพราะเป็นทัวร์เดียวกัน แต่ดีวีดี Neon Nights เด็ดกว่าตรงที่มีเพลง Children of The Sea ซึ่งถูกตัดออกไปในฉบับบู๊ทเลค

น่าชมมาก - โดยเฉพาะการแสดงที่บัลกาเรียปี 98

ไม่เคยดูคอนเสิร์ตของ Dio ในยุคที่ Tracy G เล่นกีต้าร์มาก่อนเลย - คอนเสิร์ตนี้ภาพชัดมั้ยครัย

ไปงานวันที่ 29 นี้หรือเปล่าครับ ?  ถ้าไปก็จะไรท์ไปให้ด้วย  :)

พอป๋าแกจากไป ฟุตเตจเหล่านั้นเลยกลายเป็นมรดกให้ได้รำลึกถึง - โดยเฉพาะแฟนจากแดนสารขันต์ที่ไม่เคยได้ชมมาก่อน

ถึงจะเป็นโอกาสให้คนที่มีครอบครองไว้ได้ปล่อยของหาประโยชน์ แต่แฟนเพลงทุกคนก็ยินดี - รวมถึงศิลปินผู้ล่วงลับคนอื่นด้วย RIP.

ไม่ต้องแปลกใจหรอกครับ  - สำหรับแฟนตัวจริงนั้น ความศรัทธาคงอยู่ในใจเสมอครับ (ส่วนเรื่องเปอร์เซ็นต์ คนตายนึกไม่ได้หรอกค้าบ)
