อยากรู้ว่าแผ่นเสียงรีมาสเตอร์นั้นเสียงดีกว่าแผ่นต้นฉบับเดิมหรือไม่ เมื่อเทียบราคาของคนขายสองสามเจ้า มีเจ้าหนึ่งขายถูกสุด และรวมค่าส่งด้วย (นอกนั้นคิดค่าส่งแพงมาก สงสัย box set คงจะหนัก) จึงยอมกัดฟันซื้อครับ

Eloy 50th anniversary

1969 was an eventful and exciting year: Apollo 11 landed on the Moon, social democratic party SPD first time took over leading political positions in Germany, outbreak of the conflict in Northern Ireland, maiden flights of the "Jumbo-Jet" and the "Concorde", birth of the "Woodstock" legend and only a few months later the "Altamont" desaster during a Rolling Stones performance, "Easy Rider" at the cinemas, "Abbey Road" and "Tommy", Black Sabbath and King Crimson on the turntables for the very first time.

And it's also 50 years ago that the German prog rock band Eloy was formed in Hanover by guitarist, singer and composer Frank Bornemann. To date he's the only permanent member of the band. The following year saw the first single "Walk On", and in 1971 the Philips label released the first full album with the now famous garbage can cover. After that Eloy switched over to Cologne based company Electrola and its legendary Harvest label, where they, after three more albums, released the trilogy "Dawn" (1976), "Ocean" (1977) and "Silent Cries And Mighty Echoes" (1979). These records represented the first musical and creative highlight of the band, and album sales also reached new dimensions.

Due to this anniversary these famous three albums will be reissued. On April 26th, 2019, Universal will release a box set, entitled "The Classic Years Trilogy", which includes three 180 gram vinyl discs and the equivalent CDs in a specially designed slipcase. All recordings, taken from the original master tapes, were remastered under the direction of remaster expert Eroc. In total the numbered box set is limited to 2,000 units.

The gatefolds of "Ocean" and "Silent Cries And Mighty Echoes" stayed unchanged on the outside and were adapted on the inside by long-time Eloy graphic designer Michael Narten. The original single sleeve of "Dawn" was expanded into a gatefold, with the lyrics from the original inner sleeve now printed inside of the gatefold using a new photo. Another gatefold cover features the three CDs plus statements about each album from the original musicians.

Today Eloy still is one of the most requested prog rock acts with an always growing international fan community. The official Eloy discography counts 18 studio albums and two live recordings. In 2017 the album "The Vision, The Sword And The Pyre - Part I", an adaption of the story of the French freedom fighter Jeanne d'Arc, reached a high position in the German album charts. Frank Bornemann and his musical guests are now working hard on "Part II". And there's also a plan for further catalogue releases.

Eloy - The Classic Years Trilogy (3LP + 3CD box set) ผมเพิ่งมีโอกาสได้ฟัง box set ชุดนี้ของ Eloy เมื่อสุดสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา ฟังแผ่นเสียงรวดเดียวทั้งสามชุดต่อเนื่องกันเลย นั่นคือชุด Dawn, Ocean และ Silent Cries And Mighty Echoes หลังจากที่ได้ฟังครบทั้งสามอัลบั้มแล้ว โดยความเห็นส่วนตัว ผมว่าคุณภาพเสียงโดยรวมสู้แผ่น original ไม่ได้ แผ่นรีมาสเตอร์กล่องนี้ให้โทนเสียงที่ออกนุ่มนวล ไม่ดิบหยาบ ฟังดูเป็นผู้ดี เบสส์หนามีตัวตน การแยกมิติสเตริโอทำได้ดี (หมายถึงการเน้นชิ้นเครื่องดนตรีที่โผล่ออกลำโพงข้างโน้นข้างนี้) และเวทีเสียงค่อนข้างถอยร่นไปข้างหลัง (laid back) ซึ่งเมื่อเทียบกับแผ่น original ที่ผมมีอยู่และฟังมาอย่างทะลุปรุโปร่งแล้ว แผ่น original หรือต้นฉบับให้เสียงที่รุกเร้า เข้มข้น สด ดิบ มีไดนามิค ฟังแล้วรู้สึกสะใจกว่า และให้เวทีเสียงยื่นออกมาข้างหน้าหรือ forward ซึ่งลักษณะเหล่านี้น่าจะเหมาะสมกับแนวเพลงร็อค / progressive rock ยกตัวอย่างอัลบั้มชุด Dawn ที่เป็นแผ่นรีมาสเตอร์ พอเริ่มต้นเพลงแรก Awakening เสียงสายฟ้าฟาดและ effects ต่าง ๆ ฟังดูไม่ค่อยเร้าใจและเสียดแทงแก้วหูเท่าแผ่น original และผมต้องเร่ง volume แอมป์ขึ้นไปอีกหนึ่ง step จึงจะได้ยินเสียงครบเต็มอิ่ม คือจากเดิมที่เคยฟังแผ่น original ผมเร่ง volume แอมป์ถึงแค่ระดับ 9 นาฬิกาก็ได้ยินเสียงดังเต็มห้องแล้ว แต่พอมาฟังแผ่นรีมาสเตอร์ ผมต้องสวิง volume ขึ้นไปถึงระดับ 10 นาฬิกาจึงจะฟังแล้วรู้สึกโอเค สรุปว่าผมรู้สึกค่อนข้างผิดหวังกับคุณภาพเสียงของแผ่นรีมาสเตอร์กล่องนี้ แต่ผู้ฟังหรือแฟนของ Eloy คนอื่น ๆ อาจเห็นต่างจากผมก็ได้ อย่างไรก็ตาม ผมคงไม่ถึงกับเสียดายเงินสามพันกว่าบาทเพื่อให้ได้ box set กล่องนี้มาหรอกครับ 555

สำหรับอัลบั้มชุดนี้ ตอนนี้มีผู้รีวิวอยู่แค่รายเดียวใน progarchives แกสับ Frank Bornemann ซะเละเลย แต่จะเห็นด้วยกับเขาหรือไม่ ก็ต้องไปลองทำการบ้านกันดู ส่วนผมเองก็ยังไม่ได้ทำครับ 555

This is an awful, awful, awful, awful, awful album. Even worse than their last.

Frank is getting worse as a singer, and that's all that he does on this album. The album is just short songs with terrible fadeouts and absolutely no traces of symphonic sounds or spacey rock.

The songs are boring, and really bad. The only good thing about this album is the production. Frank should engineer and mix other bands and stop making music as Eloy.

The legacy of Eloy is tainted by this release and the release before it. Avoid listening to this album and stick with their symphonic spacerock-albums.

ผมได้รับแผ่นเสียงชุด The Vision, The Sword and The Pyre Part II ของ Eloy ที่ส่งมาจากเยอรมนีแล้ว พอแกะซีลออกดูเนื้อในมีแผ่นเสียงอยู่ 2 แผ่นในปก jacket ที่ไม่ใช่แบบ gatefold ซึ่งในนั้นมี inner sleeve อยู่อันหนึ่งที่เป็นกระดาษอาบมัน มีเนื้อร้องและข้อความพิมพ์ไว้ ส่วน inner sleeve อีกอันหนึ่งเป็นซองสีขาวล้วนทั่วไป แผ่นเสียงทั้งสองแผ่นมีเพลงอยู่แค่ 3 หน้าเท่านั้น ส่วนหน้าสุดท้ายของแผ่นที่สองเป็นหน้าว่างเปล่าครับ

ขอเรียนตรง ๆ ว่า ผมได้ฟัง The Vision, The Sword and The Pyre Part I ไปแล้ว รู้สึกยังไม่ค่อยซาบซึ้งเท่าที่ควร หรือเป็นเพราะไม่คุ้นกับแนวทางดนตรีของ Eloy ในยุคใกล้ปี 2020 ก็ไม่ทราบ (ซึ่งผมเห็นว่าแตกต่างจากดนตรีของพวกเขาในยุค 1970's ถึง 1980's อยู่พอสมควร กล่าวคือ ยังเป็น Eloy อยู่ก็จริง แต่เป็น Eloy ยุคใหม่ เกือบสองทศวรรษหลังปี ค.ศ. 2000) เมื่อฟังผลงานในลักษณะ opera rock concept เช่นนี้ ก็เหมือนอ่านหนังสือเป็นเล่ม ยิ่งมี Vol. 1, Vol. 2 etc. ด้วยแล้ว ยิ่งสนุก ชวนให้ติดตาม และต้องใช้ความพยายามค่อนข้างมาก ถ้าอ่าน Vol. 1 แล้วยังไม่เข้าใจ ก็ต้องกลับไปอ่านมันอยู่อย่างนั้นจนกว่าจะเข้าใจ... ไม่ทราบเคยเป็นกันบ้างหรือเปล่าครับ 555
