I know the story of the crane wife, or at least a variant of it. The one I know is of a poor hunter is out hunting and finds a crane stuck in the woods. He lets it go and goes back home to his wife. They're an older couple that never had children. Later that night a girl/young woman/teenager shows up. They take her in because there's a storm (it's winter), and she tells them about her life, that all her family is dead and she's looking for somewhere to go. The couple invites her to stay with them since they never had kids. So she stays with them and is like their daughter. They hit hard times one day with the higher up. So the girl offers her help. She goes into a room and basically commands that they do not enter the room while she is in there. She goes in and spends a few hours weaving. She comes out with the most gorgeous kimono ever. The hunter sells it and gets enough gold to pay his debt to the higher up. Some time goes by, and they hit hard times again. The girl does the same thing. This time it takes around a whole day. The couple hears the noise of the loom and are shocked and in wonder at whats going out. The girl comes out, looking frazzled, but has an even better, more magnificent kimono. They sell it and get enough money to pay off the debt again. Around a year or so passes. They hit hard times again. She stays in the room for a almost a week. The couple is too curious as to what is going on. They enter the room, against the girls commands. They see a crane plucking out its feathers and weaving them. The couple is just shocked and backs out. Later the girl comes out with an even kimono, the best yet. However, after giving it to them, the girl basically tells them they broke their promise to never enter the room, and she says shell be leaving now. They are remorseful and pleading, but the girl transforms into a crane and flies away.
That's where my girlfriend stopped telling me the story, because... well it came to an end.
Perhaps this is where the remorseful tone of the song comes from. Sorry if this is a well-known story; Ive never heard it before.
